STI peaked on 22 May 2013 – Should have sold off in May?

Since the 52-week peak of Straits Times Index (STI) on 22 May, STI continues to drop. Currently, STI is at 3,252.56 points (2.19 pm, 5 June).

  STI Change
31 Dec 2012 3,167.08
1 May 2013 3,368.18 + 6.34%
22 May 2013 3,454.37 + 9.07%
4 June 2013 3,291.35 – 4.71%
5 June 2013, 2.19 pm 3,252.56 – 1.17%

As at 2.19pm, year-to-date change from start of 2013 was just 2.7%. At its peak, the year-to-date gain was 9.07%. So it appears that “sold in May” strategy works for investors to lock in gains in May.
