This project to celebrate 24th Anniversary of the Substation during SeptFest 2014 came out of the blue to Momshoo at the start of this year. Momshoo was a daughter and mum craft duo team who creates whimsical items that are individually hand-stitched and hand-knitted.
The result is that two huge pillars of the building, the main doors to the entrance and many pipe exhibits were covered with knitted yarn pieces. It was a huge undertaking for Momshoo and therefore involvement of the community was initiated.
Eight knitting parties (over four weekends in April and May) were held to bring like-minded knitters together to produce pieces for the installation. Two hundred people came together and knit up a storm. The camaraderie was excellent and participants gelled with a single purpose. I was part of these sessions and being a male in this female dominated domain, I did not feel odd but instead appreciated that knitting brought people closer together as they knitted and talked on anything under the sun.
This installation is on display at the Substation (Armenian Street) till end September. It was first unveiled at last weekend start of the Singapore Night Festival 2014. Come and see it if you are around that area.
